  33. we need a new, genderless pronoun.  My suggestion: "e."  Yup, just "e."

  102. The PHAST newsletter is published entirely with PageStream.
  103. Are there any other ST Clubs out there that would like to
  104. share ideas about PgS and newsletters?? I would like to
  105. see ideas about how PgS more effectively. Or what kind of
  106. clip art you use. Or how you use PgS in making your newsletter.

  108. I have not worked with PgS myself. A couple other PHAST clubmembers
  109. do most of the work. BUt I would like to help  them so any
  110. info would be appreciated. Our newsletter is printed out
  111. so that it is folded in half and then stapled (using standard
  112. 8.5" x 11" paper). The guys doing the work seem to like PgS
  113. version 1.8 alot.

  130. When you use PC Ditto (software version) on a 1meg ST, you have 703K of
  131. memory in PC mode.  What can you do with that extra memory?  Can you
  132. create a 63K ram disk, leaving you with 640K while giving you some extra
  133. speed?  Can you create bigger ram disks, which will use the 63K in
  134. addition to whatever other part of the 640 you want?....I'm new to the
  135. ms-dos world, only getting into it after having gotten PC Ditto (which I
  136. really like as a software product!).  So, if anyone out there has any
  137. suggestions on this topic, I'd appreciate it if you could keep it as
  138. simple as possible.  Thanks!

  140. know if they have an address on CIS (since that can be accessed via
  141. email without actually being on CIS)?

  171. Now that Richard's fixed his signature, we have a better chance of
  172. mailing him directly, but I thought the following might be of more
  173. general interest.
  174.  
  175. How well the Laserbrain emulates an Epson depends on several things,
  176. including how good the printer driver of your applications program is,
  177. and what fonts you have installed.
  178.  
  179. On the first point, where I work we nearly despaired when we got the
  180. Laserbrain and tried printing the test document from First Word Plus
  181. (UK v3.14).  Hardly any of the style features worked, and after
  182. printing the character table the rest of the document was printed in
  183. the tiny 'York 16' default font.  We later found out that the supplied
  184. PRINTER.CFG file was for the wrong version of First Word Plus.  (I
  185. suspect Atari UK had simply redistributed an out-of-date German
  186. version, but everyone knows how bad they are, so I'll stop flaming
  187. them.)  After we took the PRINTER.HEX file and reinstalled the .CFG
  188. file, all was well.  Similarly, with WordPerfect ST: when we tried it
  189. with Laserbrain and the WP Epson FX80 driver, we got rubbish, and only
  190. with the latest (Aug 89) version of WordPerfect, which comes with a
  191. dedicated Laserbrain driver, have we had success.
  192.  
  193. On the second point, the number of 'style features' you get depends on
  194. the set of fonts you have installed.  With the supplied ELITE.DRF
  195. (DRF=Druckerfont??  German again??) file, you can get bold, and
  196. italics, but not bold italics, and there's no condensed font.  It's
  197. not too difficult to add fonts to the file, but they all take up
  198. space.  ELITE.DRF is 350k, and you could easily double that size if
  199. you wanted a full set.  You might need a 500k file to cover 99% of
  200. your needs.
  201.  
  202. Apart from that, it works pretty well.  Except that it occasionally
  203. locks up, or starts printing the same few lines all down a page, or
  204. throws a page in unexpected places.  I'm not an expert, so I don't
  205. know if this is a Laserbrain fault or a TOS fault or something to do
  206. with the timing of the Atari's DMA channel (I suspect the latter, but
  207. I'm not sure.)  It is, however, for all its faults a great improvement
  208. on the Diablo emulator.  To begin with, it actually comes with some
  209. documentation!
  210.  
  211. I hope this is some help to Laserbrain users.  I'd like to see the PD
  212. libraries carry some disks with better-thought-out font sets.

  270.         I talked to the Analog subscription office.  They said that
  271.         the December issue was the last and that they would be issuing
  272.         refunds.  I haven't heard anything official from them yet.

  274.         The reason I was talking to them in the first place is that
  275.         they sent me the 8-bit disk for Nov and Dec.  (My subscription
  276.         was transferred from ST LOG as well.)  They told me they would
  277.         send out the right disks, but I haven't gotten them yet either.
